Réseau Santé – Nouvelle-Écosse has published a new report on French-language service provision in long-term care homes and home care in Nova Scotia’s Acadian regions. The report provides 11 recommendations of measures that would contribute to improving the provision of French-language services by these providers.
The report stems from research conducted for the Réseau Santé that sought to understand the realities and challenges faced by long-term care facilities and home care services in Acadian regions and to provide suggestions to overcome those challenges.
Among the report’s conclusions, of note is that care homes and home care services are aware of the importance of providing services in French. Nevertheless, the challenges that they identified include staff shortages in all roles and the inflexible nature of waiting lists, whereby a francophone cannot refuse a bed in an English-speaking home because they would then find themselves at the end of the list as a result.
“This research will help us in our efforts to improve the provision of French-language services to seniors in our Acadian communities,” said Gisèle Thibodeau, president of Réseau Santé. “We will work closely with our partners and stakeholders working in this area to ensure that we see progress.”
